Painting and photograph by Helen Smith

the line of unavoidable tragedy

I draw the line of unavoidable tragedy it winds its way in paint blue a river, each teardrop melting into one caressing the marks of my soul

the line is calling my fingers to thread it through the canvas ‘acknowledge me’ unbroken, as another travels to her future

make what you make with love she whispers a voice that carries across quantum time a songline softer than the altar rose

pray into the paint dream through the pen weave hope into the fibres of your creation

loss is inevitable here, pain is in your bones you are human, after all

so take it to the canvas take my lineage into your line paint me into your future lean on my words as you shake in your boots

it is beauty who awakens trust me we have seen too much of sorrow and grief yet in beauty we become legends

so tug on the red thread, sister and paint the stars

for this is the colour of woman

This poem is taken from my collection, song of the red thread.
